Sardines, also known as the (young) European pilchard, are widely distributed in European seas, reaching northward waters in the vicinity of the British Isles. They spawn (deposit eggs) in spring and summer in the open sea. After spawning, they migrate northwards to their feeding grounds and are then found in coastal waters.
